Why We Launched the Emotional Support Services Program and What It Means for Our Families

For over 45 years, Candlelighters has walked alongside families in our community through one of the most difficult experiences imaginable: childhood cancer. We've always known that our work goes far beyond the hospital room. Cancer impacts every corner of a family's life—not just physically, but emotionally, financially, and spiritually.

Today, I am thrilled to share something that has been in the works for quite some time: the launch of our Emotional Support Services Program. This is a milestone moment for us, and more importantly, for the families we serve.

A Vision Rooted in Listening
This program was born from countless conversations—with parents who felt overwhelmed, siblings who felt invisible, and survivors who carried invisible scars long after treatment ended. They told us that the emotional toll of childhood cancer is just as real as the physical one.

We listened. And we knew we had to do more.

Mental Health Matters—For the Whole Family
Our Emotional Support Services Program offers individual therapy, couples counseling, group therapy, art therapy, and play therapy—all provided by licensed mental health professionals, at no cost to families.

What sets this program apart is its whole-family approach. Most mental health services focus solely on the diagnosed child. But we know cancer affects everyone: parents, siblings, and even extended family members. That’s why we’re proud to offer support groups tailored specifically for parents and teens, ensuring every voice is heard and every heart has a safe place to heal.

Why This Matters So Much
Childhood cancer is traumatic. The anxiety, fear, and uncertainty can take a heavy emotional toll—not only during treatment, but for years afterward. Parents have shared feelings of guilt, exhaustion, and helplessness. Siblings sometimes feel left behind or struggle with their own fears. And survivors often experience long-term mental health challenges, including depression and anxiety.

We created this program to meet families where they are, emotionally and mentally, from the very beginning of their cancer journey. Our goal is simple: to reduce stress, build coping skills, and help families emerge stronger together.

Made Possible by Community Generosity
This program wouldn’t be possible without the incredible generosity of our donors and sponsors. Because of their belief in our mission, we were able to partner with some of the most compassionate and skilled mental health clinicians in the region—people who are deeply committed to supporting our families.

We’re also grateful to our medical partners at Summerlin Hospital and Cure 4 The Kids Foundation, who refer families to us and recognize the importance of addressing emotional health as part of the healing process.

Looking Ahead
Launching the Emotional Support Services Program is more than an expansion of our offerings—it’s an affirmation of our belief that every part of a family matters. We’re not just supporting a child in treatment; we’re strengthening the entire foundation that surrounds that child.
